Why Next.js? (And When It Is the Right Choice)
Next.js is the React framework maintained by Vercel. It is widely adopted for product and content sites because it gives you several rendering strategies in one codebase, instead of forcing a single-page-app trade-off. The strategies that matter:
- Server-Side Rendering (SSR): HTML is rendered on each request. Best for pages that are personalized or change on every view (dashboards, authenticated areas, search results).
- Static Site Generation (SSG): Pages are prerendered to HTML at build time and served from a CDN. Fastest possible delivery; ideal for marketing pages, docs, and blogs.
- Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR): Static pages that are regenerated in the background on a schedule or on demand. You get static-fast delivery for content that still needs to stay fresh — large catalogs, news, listings.
- Streaming with React Server Components: The server can send the static shell of a page first and stream slower, data-dependent sections in as they resolve, using Suspense. This improves perceived load time and First Contentful Paint.
SEO and Core Web Vitals
Because Next.js can render real HTML on the server, search engines and AI crawlers receive fully-formed content instead of an empty JavaScript shell — a meaningful advantage over client-only SPAs for indexability. When Next.js is not the best fit: A small brochure site with no dynamic data may be simpler on a static-site generator or a no-code platform.
